RE: Truck Bed Storage?

http://elmore.cc/david/Truck/Truck.html
Apparently you can order it from Ford with this bed in it.
Give you that factory bed look but with some extra storage!
I would give my left arm for a bed like that "Royal Sport Bed" in the link juschuman provided.... WOW!!!!
Appaarently Royal Truck Body made them some years ago but they are no longer available :?
Has anybody here seen a bed like that one from Royal for a late model Dodge truck?

RE: Is there mini propane generator available in North America?

Is anyone aware of a proven portable compact 2.5 kwt propane generator on the North American market? Roughly the same size and weight as the Honda EU2000 package?
I recently converted my EU2000i to tri-fuel with a kit from Central Maine Diesel. My Honda is mounted inside my generator compartmentand running on propane with the 1gal internal gasoline tank as a reserve.
I also have added a connection to my natural gas line at home so that I can use the genny for backup power in the event of a power outage (very uncommon here in NoCal!).
Sure this conversion probably voids the warranty, but Honda generators are both reliable an inexpensive, so I'm not concerned about that.

In my 935 the wiring was in the ceiling behind one of the speakers (above the bed).

RE: Smallest/cheapest inverter I've seen

I picked up that same inverter a few months ago on-sale at West Marine for $9.99 and It works great!! Still an awesome deal at $19.99.
I use it to power my satellite tuner when I don't have the ProSine fired-up.

RE: Pac Brake or Jake Brake?

I selected the PacBrake after reading the numerous rave reviews on DTR. Now after a year of ownership, I am thrilled with the performance! I don't even touch the brake pedal on grades that formerly left me white knuckled and with smoking brakes. As CumminsDriver pointed out, the PacBrake uses an on-board air compressor which I also use for my airbags, air-horn and tire inflation. I think the kit (brake and trans controller, no comp') set me back about $900. I installed it myself in an hour and a half (my on-board air was already in place).
My dad has the factory Jacobs exhaust brake on his '07 and I can say that (from the seat-of-the-pants perspective) they feel very similar, although I think my PacBrake offers a little more braking at lower engine RPM's. I certainly appreciate the fact that, as of '06, the Jacobs is a dealer approved/installed/warrantied unit on the Ram trucks with slushboxes... That alone might be enough to sway my decision.

RE: Backup Propane Tank

Will a one pound bottle really run the fridge for more than a day?
Well, the "more than a day" answer depends upon a lot of things; the outside temp, the fridge thermostat setting, how often & how long you you have the door open, etc...
Using simple math; A pound of propane contains 21,500BTUs of energy. On average, RV fridges use around 800 BTU's per hour. If we assume a duty cycle of 50% then one pound of propane will operate the fridge for ~50 hours.

RE: Backup Propane Tank

Count me as another vote for the "Steak-Saver" adaptor!
I have never run out of propane, but I always have my adaptor and a 1lb propane bottle on board as a backup (the extra bottle fits in the corner of my propane compartment). Though it wouldn't run the furnace very long, the 1lb bottle would be plenty to fire-up the cook-top and would operate the fridge for a couple of days.

RE: Bodega Dunes Campground, CA

I think that Wright's Beach is one of the best campgrounds in the state. It is located about 5 miles north of Bodega Dunes. The campground is clean, TC friendly and several of the sites are right on the beach. The only downside is that swimming & surfing are prohibited due to the high surf and strong rip-current.

RE: LED Lights . . . are they holding up?

I have had LED's on one side of each of my 2-bulb light fixtures (the other side still has the incandescent bulb) for the past year or so. When I am camping I leave them on almost continuously and all the LED's are still burning brightly... even with the daily 14.2V bulk charge from the solar panels. They are from Super Bright LEDs. The ones I am using are the 1156 base with 36 wide-angle white LEDS (p/n 1156-PCB-W36).

RE: Road Master Sway Bar

AF1, you didn't mention what truck you have!?!
I have the RoadMaster bar on my Ram3500 and it made a huge difference in sway with the camper on. The truck never exhibited much sway while empty anyway... so the unloaded ride is about the same. I picked mine up on sale at CW. In my opinion, the RoadMaster is THE anti-sway bar for late model Dodge trucks.

RE: Digital Volt gauge installation

A few years back I put a pair of Datel 2-wire digital voltmeters in my VW camper-van. They are compact, accurate (+/- .01V), draw only 2mA (can be loft on all the time)and easy to install. I selected their model "DMS-20LCD-0-DCM-C" which is available from Newark Electronics for around $30.
My TC has digital volt meters in both the inverter control panel and the solar controller... more than enough battery monitoring for me.

RE: Small tubes

GE has recently introduced a new line of products called Caulk Singles that come in a handly 1.25 oz dispenser-pack.
They are really convenient and IMHO are a must-have in your camper toolkit.
The Caulk Singles are only available in silicone (clear & white) and white paintable acrylic, so they are not appropriate sealants for an EPDM roof, but they are an excellent choice for many other RV caulking needs.

Wow, that's really cool! Nice to have the option to use the fuel of your choice. Definitely on my upgrade list.

Dodge Ram Front Hitch (w/pics)

I have been looking for a front hitch solution for quite some time, both for backing my trailer and for carrying a front cargo rack... I checked out the products from Bodiak and Curt, but both offer hitches that are bulkier and are more complex than I wanted. I was inspired by Bodiak's single-hook hitch, but they stick out pretty far (read: "ugly") and I didn't like that they clamped to the tow-hooks.
Ultimately I decided to build my own hitch(es) and mount them in place of the factory tow-hooks. Here's a few pic's of what I did;
http://www.simulationfx.com/FrontHitch1
Machined steel components before welding. (Factory tow-hook shown on upper left)
http://www.simulationfx.com/FrontHitch2
Completed hitch after welding and powder-paint.

Driver's side hitch installed.
I am still looking for design ideas for the front cargo tray. Ideally it would lock in both the up and down position. If you have built or seen any an interesting designs for a cool fold-up cargotray, please post a photo or two.
Cheers

RE: BurningMan, whos goin'?

I asked who was going in hopes of planning an on-playa get-together. If you are attending and would like to meet for a cold beer or cup of Gatorade, please send me a PM.
With regards to BurningMan... I would not be so bold as to tell anybody if it was an appropriate event for them or their family. I can say that there are ALL types of people there (all ages, all races, all religions, all political beliefs, RV'ers & tent-campers). If you are interested in learning about it there is loads of information on their website (burningman dot com)... or you can PM me and I'll share what I know.

RE: Having T/C level when plugged in to house.

If the refrigerator is not leveled to specs, generally 6 degrees front to back and 3 degrees side to side looking at the front of the unit, you will do severe damage to it.
Heavy Hauler, et all...
Please note that an absorption refrigerator should be within 3 degrees of level front to back and 6 degrees side to side... looking at the front of the fridge.
(not the other way around as you stated above)

RE: Best method to level a Truck and camper?

I always try to get level with the airbags first... if that isn't sufficient I use Lynx Levelers (I keep a bunch of them in the basement). I've used them in hot and cold weather and on all kinds of surfaces, never had a problem.
Depending upon where I'm camped and for how long, I may lower the jacks just enough to stabilize.
